Gertrude “Gertie” Powell Blake
Gertie was the second child born into the Powell household. She married Willie Blake, and early in their marriage they lived in Charleston, South Carolina.
Her StoryEducation & Caretaking
Gertie hosted her sisters Vermel and Emma, along with her niece Hermina, while they attended Burke High School.
Entrepreneurial Spirit
Gertie was a true entrepreneur. She owned a two-story building in McClellanville next to Bennie’s home on Society Road. The building housed:
A grocery and household goods store on the first floor
A restaurant by day and juke joint on weekends on the second floor
A sanctuary for traveling churches on Sunday mornings
She and Willie also owned rental cabins on Highway 17, a watermelon field, a traveling sales cart, and sponsored excursions to Savannah, GA, and Myrtle Beach, SC.
Legacy
Her goddaughter Dollie Powell Johnson remembered her as soft-spoken but firm in her opinions. Gertie’s only child passed away in infancy and is buried with Grandma Dollie and Aunt Vermel.
